Ethiopian Crosses

Ethiopian culture has been defined for the past 17 centuries through its Christian faith.

Although Christianity was known in Ethiopia from as early as the 1st century, the conversion of the Aksumite king Ezana about AD330 turned it into a state religion, (which it remains for more than half the population today)

Evidence supports that 2 Syrians became influencial at the Aksumite court and were responsible for the conversion.

4th centrury Aksumite coins depict the cross as one of the earliest surviving large scale uses anywhere of the cross as a Christian symbol.
